When planning a trip to Kanazawa and nearby destinations such as Shirakawa-go, Gokayama and Takayama, choosing the right transportation can make a significant difference to your journey.

Public transportation is useful for many routes, but fixed schedules, transfers and luggage handling can make some journeys less convenient. This is particularly true when travelling between hotels or visiting several places in one day.

A private taxi offers door-to-door transportation and allows the itinerary to be planned around your group’s schedule. As an active taxi driver based in Kanazawa, I would like to share some practical points to consider before requesting a private taxi.

When Is a Private Taxi Useful?

A private taxi may be particularly useful for couples, families and small groups who want to travel comfortably without having to manage train or bus transfers.

It can also be helpful when travelling with several suitcases, visiting rural destinations or moving directly from one hotel to another.

Before requesting a private taxi, consider the following points:

  • Travel time: Depending on the route, traffic, road and weather conditions, journeys between Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and Takayama may take approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours or longer.

  • Luggage: The number and size of suitcases affect which vehicle is suitable. Please provide accurate luggage information when requesting a quotation.

  • Vehicle type: Standard taxis, minivans and larger vehicles may be available, depending on the date and operating schedule. The most suitable vehicle will depend on the number of passengers, luggage and availability.

  • Advance arrangements: A private taxi should normally be requested in advance, especially during busy travel periods.

  • Additional expenses: Highway tolls, parking charges, admission fees and other incidental expenses are generally separate from the private taxi fare unless the quotation specifically states otherwise.

A private taxi does not necessarily replace public transportation for every traveller. However, it can reduce the inconvenience of transfers and make journeys with luggage considerably easier.

How to Request a Private Taxi through DuoTaro

DuoTaro is a private booking and travel-information website operated by me, an active taxi driver based in Kanazawa.

DuoTaro is not a travel agency or an interpreter-guide service. All transportation is provided in accordance with the taxi company’s availability, operating rules and applicable regulations.

The usual request process is as follows:

Plan your basic itinerary: Decide your preferred pick-up point, drop-off point, travel date, start time and places you would like to visit.

Submit a booking or quotation request: Send the details through the DuoTaro booking request form.

Provide passenger information: State the total number of guests. If children are included, please provide the number and age of each child, including infants.

Provide luggage details: State the number and approximate size of suitcases, carry-on bags and other large items.

Check vehicle availability: I will confirm whether a suitable vehicle is available through the taxi company.

Review the quotation: The quotation will normally show the private taxi fare and separately identify estimated highway tolls, parking charges and other expected expenses.

Complete the required payment: When advance payment is required, the private taxi fare is paid through PayPal. Highway tolls, parking charges, admission fees and incidental expenses are settled separately on the day of service unless otherwise stated.

Receive final confirmation: The reservation is confirmed after the necessary arrangements and payment have been completed.

Submitting a request does not automatically confirm a reservation. Vehicle availability and the itinerary must first be checked.

Early enquiries are recommended for weekends, holidays, cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season and the winter travel period.

Understanding Private Taxi Fares

Private sightseeing and long-distance taxi services are generally calculated according to the reserved operating time and vehicle category, rather than only by the distance travelled.

The final amount may be affected by:

The total reserved time

The selected vehicle category

The pick-up and drop-off locations

The planned route and sightseeing stops

Extensions beyond the agreed service time

Highway tolls

Parking charges

Admission fees and other incidental expenses

DuoTaro will provide a quotation based on the information available at the time of the request.

If the itinerary, service time, number of passengers or luggage details change, the vehicle requirements or estimated cost may also change.

What to Expect on the Day

On the day of service, the driver will aim to arrive at the agreed pick-up point on time. However, road closures, traffic congestion, severe weather and other circumstances outside the driver’s control may affect the schedule.

You can generally expect:

  • A properly licensed and maintained taxi

  • Assistance with loading and unloading luggage

  • Door-to-door transportation based on the agreed itinerary

  • A driver familiar with local roads and regional driving conditions

  • Reasonable rest, toilet or photo stops when time and road conditions permit

  • Communication about any significant change to the planned schedule

Short stops may be possible, but they should remain within the reserved time and agreed route. Additional stops or extended sightseeing may increase the operating time and fare.

Please communicate any mobility concerns, medical considerations or other important requirements before the booking is confirmed.

Travelling with Luggage, Children or Five or More Guests

Accurate passenger and luggage information is essential when selecting a vehicle.

Luggage

Please provide:

  • The number of large suitcases

  • The number of medium or carry-on suitcases

  • Any strollers, wheelchairs, ski equipment or other large items

Even when the number of passengers is within a vehicle’s seating capacity, the luggage may require a larger vehicle.

Five or More Guests

A standard taxi generally cannot accommodate five adult passengers.

For five or more guests, a larger vehicle or more than one taxi may be required. Availability must be confirmed in advance.

Children and Infants

If your group includes anyone under 12 years old, please provide each child’s age, including infants.

The vehicle capacity will be checked according to applicable regulations and the taxi company’s operating policy. Please do not decide the required vehicle solely by counting every child as an adult or by assuming that several children can always share an adult seat allocation.

If you require a child safety seat, please ask before booking. Availability is not guaranteed, so the request must be checked individually.
